My activities in Baka-Tsuki

Oh man... I didn't have time or idea to post here for a while, but now I have a new sidebar gadget "Blogger Buddy" which saves me the trouble to visit my blog and helps to post directly from my desktop. So I think I'll utilize this now.

I'd like to tell about my activities in Baka-Tsuki. It's a fellow project of wikipedia where we can read translated versions of Japanese light novels.
I was first directed here by the desire of reading Kaze no Stigma;. I loved the Anime adaptation of this and wanted to read it. I'll be publishing a blog on this anime sooner or later.

Anyway, I completed reading it, but noticed some grammar mistakes here and there. A little pondering revealed that the people who are translating this don't have the expertise in English. Moreover, they were translating it from the Chinese translation of the novel, which is prone to mistakes in the first place. So I decided to help them with the English translation by signing up and editing them.

When my contribution to Kaze no Stigma was complete, I reckoned I should check out the other light novels, see the style of Japanese light novels.

I read through 7 Nights, Ginban Kaleidoscope & Zero no Tsukaima & I also skimmed through the prologue of CubexCursedxCurious.

In the majority of novels I looked through, Boys Always Manage to get on the Wrong side of girls on the Very First Day! [ In other words, Accidental perversion leads to violent girls] Then they forgive each other and end up liking each other.

But Kaze no Stigma is an exeption; Kazuma (male protagonist) is a strong character.

He is completely immune to this stereotype. Whenever Kazuma mocks or finds himself in an awkward position with the female lead, Ayano, he doesn't submit to the stereotype and let her hurt him. he doesn't let anyone that isn't even 1/10th as skilled and powerful as he is get a hit in. He knows what's going on around him, and even in rare occasions when he doesn't know what's happening, he acts cool and comfortable. And his fights are AWESOME! With his total control of the wind, he rarely finds himself on the losing side.

Oh no... I again started blabbering about it. Sorry folks, that was supposed to come in my next post.

Anyway, I'm continuing my search on Baka tsuki for some remarkable light novels and will let you know when I find any.

Cheers.......

If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, well...... change your attitude.

Harry potter and JK Rowling. My thoughts

Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows - my favorite among the Harry Potter series. This book had a special magic which kindled the interest in me to find and read all the other books in the series.

Even though I didn't read the books in the correct order, (I read the 7th book first, 2nd book next, 4th book, 1st book, 5th book & finally, 6th book) I couldn't help noticing how passing details in the previous books evolved into crucial points in the later books.

Eg: In book no. 5, harry and friends find very strange things inside the drawing room cupboard in the Grimmauld Palace including a phial full of blood, a snuffbox full of wartcrap powder, a locket no one could open and a music box which made its listeners sleepy. The unopenable locket turned out to be one of the horcruxes of Voldemort, the Slytherin's locket!

I really appreciate Rowling on writing all the 7 books. Do you know why? It takes more than a ton of imagination and talent to sketch out a completely new magical world with plenty of detail which makes the reader feel like he/she is actually seeing it in a simple easy-to understand style. And how she keeps track of the things she tells in her stories is really admirable. It was a surprise for me to find that passing details develop into crucial points on which the story revolves. Plus, it would a difficult job to keep the rich creative juice flowing through the books while jumping over the criticisms which pose as hurdles.

On the start of my holidays, I had an inspiration I yearned to turn into a story. I had no encouragement from anyone as I kept my story writing a secret. I energetically started on the story. On times I was stuck at some point, J K Rowling's books helped me. I adopted her style of writing and occasionally consulted her books to find out how to describe scenes. My flow of enthusiasm reached a pause as I neared the end of the story. At first, I didn't even have a vague idea how the climax should be. I consulted several people without letting them on the secret and finally found one myself. But I lost the interest to turn it into words. I turned to perfecting the rest of the story. But even then the interest and imagination to complete it didn't rekindle inside me. As I am now 2 weeks away from the end of my holiday, I think its reviving now.

Now I know how difficult it is to write a good story. If this is my case, imagine what Rowling might have gone through with loads of appreciation, criticisms and much more expectations (:-o) Indeed, her books will be read, reread and read again.

She is like a role model for me in the field of writing, even though I didn't acknowledge it first. I hadn't quite mastered the technique of writing whatever that came to my mind in an effective way before I was acquainted with J K Rowling's work. Through her books, I learned how to describe something differently and effectively and also helped me discover a comfortable style for me to write (or type). Now, I just have to find the right ideas to work on and to learn how to keep up my interest and creativity going.
